Blog Post Week 10: Progress Report

You know that old TV trope of a character confidently sitting down to do a big project, so sure of themselves and two seconds later, the scene cuts to the character looking distressed surrounded by pies of crumpled paper? That was me with recording and editing.

I scheduled a 45 minute time period for my first recording session. I was not sure how long it would take to record. I figured I had more than enough time. I was there for two hours. I learned two things about myself that night. The first is I run out of breath way too easily and the second is that is when I read out loud, I take very long and awkward pauses. I kept reminding myself of the very first lesson about not hating the sound of my voice. It was very odd, hearing my voice in the headphones attached. It was louder than usual because of that. Still, I focused on my script and kept my voice level like the people in the other podcast we have listened to.

Afterward, I decided that I was going to edit my introduction and my conclusion sections for the rough draft assignment. I figured both would be easier to do than the sections within the time limit of the assignment.

"How hard can this be?" I foolishly say to myself as I begin to edit in the early morning. It took me five hours to edit five minutes of this project. I was only ten minutes away from missing the deadline. One thing I learned was how much silence to cut down without my speech becoming unnatural. My worry was that I was going over, I was over by about five minutes over the ten minutes, but after editing my introduction section, which is about 3 minutes and 45 seconds, I edited out about one full minute of dead silence. If this pattern continues I will have to edit out a total of five minutes of silence, bringing it to ten minutes.

I love how my audio turned out. I am so happy that the old-timey radio effect worked, it sounds so cool!

Technically, all I have left to do is edit the five sections I have each episode, music, and sound effects I want to use already downloaded. However, today I decided to rerecord my entire audio again. I noticed that while I was editing, that I was clipping the microphone too much so I had to redo those sections. Also, it is good to have a backup just in case.

I got feedback about having some sound effects fade in and out but other than that, my two groupmates had minimum critics. Still, I am going to keep what they said in mind and make sure my sound effects do not start or end abruptly. I am prepared to spend hours going over each second of audio but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Overall, I would say I am enjoying this project even if it is hard work. I can't wait to see how the rest turns out.
