Blog Post Week 8: Remediations and AUs
Whenever a professor asks if the class knows the meaning of something, I tend to nod my head no. I like to get clear definitions in case the professor has a different definition. Though, when Dr. Gerding asked if anyone heard of remediation, my no was genuine. The word itself did not even seem familiar to me. However, once I learned what remediation actually is, it turned out that I have been using remediation for years.
One way you can use remediation is by taking another creator's creation and transforming it into something original. Normal people probably have a smart or sophisticated example of this. However, I myself am strange and unusual. So the first thing I thought of was fanfiction. Fanfictions are stories based on popular media and its characters. That are so many different types of fanfiction. There are in-canon fanfictions that follow the canon storyline as a way of predicting what happens next or changing some things that happen in canon. There is a fanfic genre call alternate universes, or AUs for short, is when you take the characters from one fictional universe to another one. For example, I am in the process of writing fanfiction for the series Sanders Sides. It follows one of the characters Roman and Virgil as Belle and Beast in Beauty and the Beast respectively. I like them together as a couple or ship them, and Beauty and the Beast is my favorite movie, however, I am getting ahead of myself.
I have been writing fanfictions officially since 2018. Before that, I would write small stories but never shared them. My best friend convinced me to post one on the popular fan website Tumblr after I shared it with him. I have been writing and post fanfics ever since in my free times. I write mostly one-shots, or fanfictions that do not have chapters, but I do have some chapter fics, like the Beauty and the Beast AU I mentioned before. I mostly write for the series Sanders Sides and Devil May Cry. I plan to continue to write fanfictions in the future. I hope my experience with fanfictions will help me with Unit 3.
Hi Gabby,
ReplyDeleteI'm actually a fanfiction writer too! Right now, I'm in the middle of writing a fanfiction about the aftermath of a horror video game called Until Dawn. Have you heard of it? I really enjoy writing fanfiction too - I use it as practice to hone my storytelling skills for when I write stories of my own someday.
I find it interesting when you say that fanfiction is a form of remediation. And I think this idea is simultaneously right and wrong. You're right in that fanfiction is making something original out of something created by someone else - so I guess that makes it kind of remediation. But I think remediation is taking something from medium and transforming it into another medium - like turning a book into a movie or incorporating clips from a movie into a song. What other kinds of remediation can you think of?
